CbnThe Government of Andhra Pradesh is gearing up to relaunch the popular Anna Canteens across the state, beginning on August 15, coinciding with the celebration of Independence Day. As part of this initiative, the state plans to inaugurate 100 Anna Canteens in the first phase on this significant day.

Chandrababu Naidu, former Chief Minister and leader of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), is scheduled to visit Gudivada in the Krishna district on August 15, where he will officially inaugurate one of these canteens. This event marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to revive the program, which had been discontinued by the previous administration.

In preparation for the reopening of the Anna Canteens, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister Ponguru Narayana has been actively engaging with officials to ensure a smooth restart. During recent discussions, Minister Narayana emphasized that these canteens would operate at full capacity starting August 16, a day after their official launch.

Minister Narayana also visited the Akshaya Patra kitchen in Atmakuru village, located in the Mangalagiri Mandal, to oversee the food distribution arrangements for the canteens. The Akshaya Patra Foundation has been contracted to manage food distribution for the Anna Canteens, a decision that reflects the organization’s strong reputation for maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene in its kitchens.

During his visit, Minister Narayana highlighted the achievements of the previous TDP government, noting that from 2014 to 2019, meals were provided at the nominal cost of Rs. 5, with approximately 4.60 crore meals served during that period. He also criticized the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) for shutting down the Anna Canteens shortly after assuming power in 2019, a move that he argued was detrimental to the state’s underprivileged population.

Minister Narayana reaffirmed the government’s commitment to serving the people through the relaunch of the Anna Canteens. The government’s plan includes establishing 200 canteens in rural areas and 180 in urban centers. Most of these canteens will be strategically located near hospitals and markets to better serve the needs of the poor and needy.

This initiative is expected to provide much-needed relief to many residents across Andhra Pradesh, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, by offering affordable, nutritious meals in a clean and accessible environment.Read more
