“Indian Couple Jailed in US for Forced Labor and Abuse”

couple from Virginia, who are Indian American, have been sentenced for making the man’s younger cousin work at their gas station and convenience store for over three years. Harmanpreet Singh, 31, and Kulbir Kaur, 43, who are now divorced, received different prison sentences for their actions. Singh received 135 months in prison, while Kaur was sentenced to 87 months. Additionally, they were ordered to pay the victim $225,210.76 (INR 1.8 crores) in restitution.
The couple lured the victim to the United States with promises of education, only to confiscate his immigration documents upon arrival and force him to work long hours with minimal pay. They subjected him to physical and mental abuse, including threats and intimidation. After a two-week trial in January, a federal jury in Virginia found Singh and Kaur guilty of forced labor and other related crimes.
Evidence presented at the trial showed that in 2018, Singh and Kaur convinced Singh’s younger cousin, who was a minor at the time, to come from India to the U.S. with false promises of education. Instead, they made him work at Singh’s store from March 2018 to May 2021. The victim endured grueling work hours, typically ranging from 12 to 17 hours a day, nearly every day, for very little compensation.
Singh and Kaur employed various methods to exert control over the victim. They seized his immigration papers, subjected him to physical abuse, and made constant threats. The victim was forced to sleep in a back office, received inadequate food, was denied medical care and education, and was monitored through surveillance cameras.
The case highlights the severe exploitation and abuse the victim suffered at the hands of Singh and Kaur, leading to their significant prison sentences and financial restitution ordered by the court.USARead more..
