YS Jagan ‘One-Time MLA’ Remark on Pawan Kalyan Provokes Supporters
During a press conference on March 5, 2025, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy addressed the state’s budget and responded to remarks made by Jana Sena Party (JSP) leader Pawan Kalyan concerning the YSR Congress Party’s (YSRCP) demand for official opposition status. When questioned about Kalyan’s comments, Reddy remarked, “That person is more than a corporator but less than an MLA. He became an MLA only once in his lifetime,” expressing disdain towards the actor-turned-politician.
This statement has sparked a strong backlash from JSP supporters on social media platforms. They argue that while Pawan Kalyan has contested two elections and secured an MLA seat once, Jagan Mohan Reddy has contested three elections as the YSRCP’s chief ministerial candidate, spending two terms in opposition before becoming chief minister. Supporters also highlight that in the 2024 elections, Reddy’s majority in his constituency, Pulivendula, was less than half of Kalyan’s majority in Pithapuram.
Further, JSP supporters emphasize their party’s recent electoral success, winning all 21 seats it contested, whereas the YSRCP secured fewer than 21 seats out of 175 contested. They perceive Reddy’s remarks as a strategic misstep that could strengthen the alliance between the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and JSP. Additionally, there is a sentiment that such comments may alienate the Kapu community, to which Kalyan belongs, potentially consolidating their support for the TDP-JSP coalition.
The escalating tensions between the YSRCP and JSP underscore the evolving political dynamics in Andhra Pradesh, with personal attacks potentially influencing party alliances and voter sentiments ahead of future elections.Read more
