USAAn Indian-origin Sikh couple residing in Richmond, Virginia, has been found guilty in the United States for exploiting a relative by compelling him to work extended hours at their store, subjecting him to physical abuse, threats, and confiscating his immigration documents. Harmanpreet Singh, 30, and Kulbir Kaur, 43, enticed the victim, who was a minor at the time, to travel to the US under false promises of education. Upon arrival, they seized his immigration documents and immediately put him to work at their gas station and convenience store.

Over a trial period from March 2018 to May 2021, the couple forced the victim to perform various tasks at the store, using coercive tactics such as physical abuse, threats, and confiscation of documents to make him work for minimal pay. The jury heard that the victim was subjected to degrading living conditions, limited access to food, and was left to sleep in the store’s back office for days. Singh and Kaur refused medical care and education, monitored him with surveillance equipment, and compelled him to overstay his visa. The couple is now facing a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, up to five years of supervised release, a fine of up to $250,000, and mandatory restitution for the forced labor charge. Sentencing is scheduled for May 8.
