RajinikanthSuperstar Rajinikanth’s latest film Vettaiyan has made a strong impact at the box office, despite initial concerns. Directed by TJ Gnanavel and featuring an ensemble cast that includes industry heavyweights like Amitabh Bachchan, Manju Warrier, Fahadh Faasil, and Rana Daggubati, Vettaiyan has captured the public’s attention, though it has not surpassed expectations. The film is now the fourth biggest opener in Rajinikanth’s illustrious career.

Rajinikanth, a name synonymous with South Indian cinema, returns to the big screen with Vettaiyan. Fans have been eager to see the collaboration between the legendary actor and director TJ Gnanavel, who is best known for his critically acclaimed film Jai Bhim. Adding to the excitement is the presence of Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan, Malayalam star Manju Warrier, and versatile actors Fahadh Faasil and Rana Daggubati. This combination of talent set high expectations for the film, particularly in terms of its box office performance.

According to initial reports, Vettaiyan has grossed between Rs 60-65 crore globally on its opening day. Of this, around Rs 35 crore is expected to come from India, while international markets have contributed approximately USD 3 million. These figures, while impressive, fall short of the Rs 75 crore debut that some analysts had predicted. However, Vettaiyan still stands as one of the major releases of the year in Kollywood, following only The Greatest Of All Time in terms of opening-day collections.

Unlike some of Rajinikanth’s previous mass-action blockbusters such as 2.0 and Kabali, Vettaiyan is seen as a relatively subdued film for the superstar. Known for his larger-than-life screen presence, this film presents Rajinikanth in a more nuanced and restrained role. While this has garnered praise from critics for showing a different side of the actor, it may have contributed to a slight dampening of enthusiasm among some of his core fanbase, which usually expects high-octane action and grandiose set pieces.

As expected, Vettaiyan is performing strongest in Tamil Nadu, which accounts for over 50% of its opening-day collections. The film has also seen solid, though not extraordinary, numbers in neighboring states. Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh/Telangana combined are estimated to bring in around Rs 9-10 crore, while Kerala is contributing an additional Rs 6 crore. Despite the presence of a pan-Indian cast, the film’s Hindi-language release has struggled, with collections.Read more
