In a stunning electoral sweep that may redefine India’s political map ahead of 2029, the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies delivered one of their biggest regional victories in recent years—capturing power in West Bengal for the first time, securing a third straight term in Assam, and retaining alliance control in Puducherry.
As party workers celebrated with drums, saffron flags, and fireworks across the country, political analysts called it “Modi-Shah’s eastern masterstroke.”
Bengal Falls, History Made
For the first time since the state’s formation, BJP has emerged as the dominant force in West Bengal, ending the 15-year rule of Mamata Banerjee and her All India Trinamool Congress.
Counting trends and declared results show BJP crossing the 200-seat mark, far above the majority line. Multiple national outlets report the party winning 206 seats.
Celebrations erupted at BJP headquarters in New Delhi as PM Modi declared:
“This is not badla… this is badlav. Bengal has chosen development.”
The remarks were reported during his address to party workers.
Assam Delivers a Hat-trick
In Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led BJP to an emphatic third consecutive mandate, defeating a fragmented opposition.
Political observers credit:
- Welfare programs
- Infrastructure push
- Border-security narrative
- Strong booth-level organisation
Economic Times described BJP as the only ruling party in these elections to defeat anti-incumbency in a major state.
Puducherry Stays with NDA
In Puducherry, the NDA alliance led by N. Rangaswamy retained control, strengthening BJP’s southern footprint.
Counting reports indicate the NDA comfortably crossed the majority mark in the 30-member assembly.
Seat Table
| State | Total Seats | Majority Mark | BJP / NDA | Main Opposition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| West Bengal | 294* | 148 | 206 | TMC ~80 |
| Assam | 126 | 64 | Clear Majority | Congress-led bloc |
| Puducherry | 30 | 16 | NDA Majority | Congress-DMK bloc |
*One Bengal constituency faced delayed counting per election coverage.

What This Means For 2029
