It has now been a week since Rajampet MP P.V. Mithun Reddy was arrested in connection with the massive Andhra Pradesh Liquor Scam, and the political fallout continues to unfold. Mithun Reddy, who holds the distinction of being Accused No. 4 (A-4) in the case, is currently lodged in Rajahmundry Central Jail. The court has remanded him until August 1st, with sources indicating that the remand period may be extended further.

Jagan Reddy’s Absence and Silence

Despite Mithun Reddy being one of the closest aides to former Chief Minister and YSRCP chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the latter has neither visited Andhra Pradesh since the arrest nor publicly shown any direct support. Political analysts and party insiders are raising questions about Jagan’s conspicuous silence and lack of personal involvement, especially given Mithun Reddy’s prominence within the party.

While family members of Mithun Reddy have reportedly relocated to Rajahmundry to maintain regular visitation, no significant YSRCP leader—other than a handful of family and close aides—has shown public solidarity. The jail allows three visitation opportunities per week, yet very few have taken the initiative to meet the embattled MP.

No Protests, No Mobilization from YSRCP

What’s even more striking is the party’s complete inaction following the arrest. Apart from a few press meets where allegations of “political vendetta” were casually thrown around, there have been no organized protests, demonstrations, or public shows of support from the YSR Congress Party. Many senior leaders have avoided commenting altogether.

Political observers believe this silence may indicate a deliberate attempt by the YSRCP to distance itself from Mithun Reddy. Even the party’s strongman in Rayalaseema and Mithun’s father, Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy, has maintained a low profile on the matter.

The Scam and the Alleged Money Trail

According to the Special Investigation Team (SIT), the primary accused in the scam—Raj Kasireddy (A-1)—was allegedly collecting Rs 50–60 crore every month through illegal liquor dealings. This money was reportedly funneled to multiple individuals, including Mithun Reddy (A-4), senior YSRCP leader V. Vijayasai Reddy (A-5), and Govindappa Balaji (A-33), a Director at Bharathi Cements and a key handler of financial transactions for Jagan Mohan Reddy’s wife, Bharathi.

Investigators claim that nearly Rs 3,500 crore was siphoned off through this network. The funds were then allegedly transferred to Jagan Mohan Reddy over time, raising serious concerns about the possible future implications for the former Chief Minister himself.

Is Jagan Bracing for the Worst?

There is growing speculation that Jagan’s silence stems from fear that he could be the next target in the investigation. By distancing himself from Mithun Reddy, some believe he is attempting to shield himself from further legal entanglement.

This theory gains traction in light of recent comments by political analysts who argue that current Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu would not have risked arresting a heavyweight like Mithun Reddy without possessing solid evidence. They also point out that, despite facing an arrest himself in the past over what was considered a minor issue, Naidu now appears to be playing a calculated and evidence-backed game.

The Road Ahead

With the investigation deepening and more names being brought into the spotlight, the scandal poses a serious threat not only to Mithun Reddy but also to the upper echelons of the YSRCP. The lack of public defense from the party only fuels speculation about internal fractures and shifting political priorities. If the allegations and financial trails hold, this case could mark the beginning of a larger political and legal reckoning in Andhra Pradesh.Read more
